Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation
Also known as Physiatry, is a medical specialty concerned with the functional restoration of a person suffering from a physical disability, as well as with helping patients achieve a speedy recovery from surgery or traumatic injuries.
The philosophical concern of Physiatry is the return of the individual patient to optimal quality of life, which means not only addressing the specific symptoms, but educating the patient to maintain health and wellness following cessation of active treatment. In cases of chronic disability, the Physiatrist is well-equipped to return the patient to a fulfilled and productive life within the physical constraints of the disability.
The Physiatrist commonly works with team of Physical Therapists to treat the patient with a variety of therapeutic modalities such as electrical stimulation of the affected area, manual and machine-assisted massage, aquatic therapy, and restorative exercises.
